Solar-Powered Cold Storage Boosts Agri Production, Benefits 300 Farmers
As much as 42% of vegetables produced in the Philippines are lost due to poor postharvest facilities.
To help reverse the situation, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has extended assistance to the Provincial Government of Nueva Ecija to put up a 24-kwp solar-powered cold storage system in the Nueva Ecija Agri-Pinoy Trading Center (NEAPTC) located in Barangay Caalibangbangan, Cabanatuan City. One Renewable constructed the grid-tied solar PV system under a net metering arrangement to maximize the solar energy generated through the cold storage facility.
Refrigeration can increase shelf life of vegetables in cold storage. The facility will benefit more than 300 members of the Nueva Ecija Fruits and Vegetable Marketing Cooperative (NEFVMC).
